Kerala Backwaters, earlier a trade highway, has become a most popular tourist destination in India. The Backwaters are inland lakes fringed with palm trees and connected by a network of canals and are spread over an area of about 1900 kilometers. These lakes are formed by the accumulation of seawater by the movement of water.
The Backwaters of Kerala offer 50 sites to visit. Kuttanad region is also known as the rice bowl of Kerala and is a famous tourist attraction. Vembanad Lake is the largest Backwaters stretch and flows through three districts namely Alappuzha, Kottayam and Kochi. Veli Aakulam lagoon is located near Thiruvananthapuram.
